America loves retards
Submitted by joyfulchicken on June 3, 2007 - 4:52pm.I've been following this new show called On the Lot. It's basically American Idol for wannabe filmmakers.
Last week, the 18 finalists each made and presented a 1-minute comedy short. America then got to vote. And by "America," I meant the 20 people who actually watched the show. It was a big-time flop--the ratings were horrible.
It's really no surprise that the show flopped. I guess it's hard to have any credibility when one of the judges is Carrie Fisher, a.k.a. Princess Leia from Star Wars. Her presence did produce one mildly funny moment though. During the result show, the nervous host mistakenly introduced her as "Carrie Fishy." Heh. I love live television.
Anyway, Jason, one of the contestants, made a comedy short called Getta Rhoom, which featured a main character that was described as a nerd but came across more like Dwight Schrute's retarded little brother.
Ms. Fishy absolutely hated it. She felt that it's offensive because it makes fun of the mentally handicapped. Jason the contestant was like, "He's not a retard! He's just a nerd!" So it's OK to make fun of nerds but not retards? Unfair!
All the judges were offended and outraged, probably because they had politically correct sticks jammed so far up their asses that they couldn't smile at a little cheap lowbrow humor. Personally, although I didn't find Getta Rhoom hilarious, I didn't find it offensive either.
Well, America voted, and guess what happened? Jason wasn't voted out. Instead, his film got into the top 3 in terms of the highest number of votes. Ha! In your face, Princess Leia. Looks like America isn't so politically correct after all.
What do you think? Did Getta Rhoom cross the line? Should there even be a line? Think and discuss.
For those of you who don't like to think, here are some of the 1-minutes comedy shorts that I liked from last week's show.
- Danger Zone - Another fan favorite. Not really funny, but visually impressive.
- Spaced Out - Funny. The director was obviously stoned when he made this.
- Replication Theory - My personal favorite. Nice twist ending.
